With the price of a PS4 and a 4k monitor you could get a really beastly gaming PC for that kind of ISK!
30 hz 4k TVs are pretty cheap these days.
The jump to 60hz @ 4k tho is pretty heavy duty. That price tag can get insane.
As for Sony releasing a PS4.5 I think that boosts their revenue but seriously hurts their fight against the PC. It only shows the weakness in consoles not being able to be upgraded without buying a whole new system and makes people question if an "upgraded version" every few years will be a new trend.
Personally I would be somewhat unhappy. I would not be mad at Sony as they have to do what is necessary to keep up but this would be a little bit of a dump on PS4 owners being forced to buy a whole new console because Sony cut corners the first time around to beat microsoft on pricing and release timing.
Leading early adopters to believe they may have to speed up their buying cycle could have some negative consequences. Just look at how much it hurt Apple getting into a constant cycle of a new phone every X amount of months. People quickly caught on and said screw it I will just buy the second newest one, used, at a cheaper price but with less early adopters the second hand market was hurt as well causing them to lose momentum in a fairly big way.
If anything this a move to push more 4k TVs on people which in turn gives them the ability to charge higher costs for movies and such in 4k but that is totally speculative. I would call this vertical integration at its finest. |

Things will probably change a little bit, considering that if the new upgrade/console is capable of a 4k output for games even at "only" 30 frames per seconds it would be a huge step in narrowing the gap between consoles and PCs. Frame rate > resolution it does indeed. But many developers could still opt for a 60 fps at 1080.
Frame rate comes at a higher premium than resolution with today's technology thanks to cheap low clock pixels.
VSYNC and perfectly stable frame rates matter far more than what your maximum FPS is.
Theoretically a machine that can run 4k @ 30hz should be able to push out an amazingly consistent 60 - 120 hz at 1080p depending on the game itself so that would excite me a bit more than the 4k aspect.
I play at 2560x1440 @ 60hz on my PC with no noticeable screen tearing, rate drops (aside from a few super high requirement games where I have to drop to 1080p), or motion blur so I feel like this is where I would like to see the PS4(.5?) land at. Even in a world where it reaches that perfect scenario for me I would have to seriously consider if I want to spend that money on a new console when that $400 - $500 would probably go real nice towards a GPU upgrade that is guaranteed to not be totally obsolete in a few years as would happen with the PS4 if this new version was released.
Side Note:
I wonder how this would be setup for developers. If it really is a different architecture that makes things a bit interesting with game releases and would not be quite as simple as just increasing the BLANK setting for the game before sending it out. Thanks to Sony making the PS4 a much cleaner architecture than the PS3 developers were already starting to hit their stride on optimizing games to this system so this also sets them back a couple of years and potentially costs lots more time and money slowing down or killing off some releases.
I do not see how anyone would benefit from this at all besides Sony.
Consumers are baited into buying a new console, and possibly a new screen only to have to pay more for premium content.
Developers get divided across versions thanks to costs and release cycle constraints and in a budget crunch could have to decide which version they want to optimize for leaving a less satisfactory out come on the other.
Sony collects more money on premium content, more money on multiple version releases, more money for yet another console, and even potentially more money on selling customers new TVs.
I feel the blatant cash grab alarm starting to sound in my mind. |

Hm. I... hm.... .... I think the apocalypse may be upon us. Trump may become president, and I ......find myself agreeing with your posts lately. o.O I am now glad I never had a child. I'm not sure I would want them growing up in a world like this. (lol)
I'm glad you feel that way.
I am also disgruntled with me agreeing with myself and very uncomfortable with the thought of a certain person who has no answers for anything being the leader of the free world. I cant decide which is worse a narcissist idiot or a menopausal socialist (you cant even tell which dem I am talking about can you?)
Anyway, I just thought I would congratulate you on your abstaining from impregnating someone as I also agree that no one should be brought into the currently pending crap storm of who knows wtf is going to happen. I believe this is why VR and AR are making great pushes because people actually believe it will wipe away their current reality. |

You're buying an entirely new console that's only slightly better than the last one, but it doesn't matter for almost any game you play, because they're optimized for the old one anyway.
That's a painfully obvious scam.
Indeed.
Assuming this is true Sony could not pick a worse time to do this. I feel like many people will take a look at PC and the PC based consoles like the Alienware Alpha which can both be upgraded along the way as oppose to having to start over on another new system over and over. |

Or if they're really adamant at having a console, they could buy a Steam Machine, because you can upgrade the hardware on those yourself instead of just buying the next best one that comes out.
The Alienware Alpha is just one of the many versions of a Steam Machine as far as I know. It seems like there is a new term every day which I just ignore the ones that do not affect me. I only know the Alienware because that was my last resort on trying to get a friend to finally leave console behind (unsuccessfully).
Now that they have finally announced a VR / AR device I am interested in I am pretty impartial to the whole argument. |

Totally agreed, it is just meant to be a stepping stone for console gamers who are oddly afraid of PC and even more so of building one.
I have actually been looking at doing some micro atx / mini itx builds in a custom case to try to capitalize on this market that is evolving right in front of us. There is certainly money to be made there thanks to console gamers wanting to get away from console but being totally clueless to the PC area. |

That's the thing: Steam Machines are the OS, not the hardware. You can build your own Steam Machine completely from scratch- you aren't limited to buying the Alpha.
This guy gets it.
That actually kind of clears up how I was looking at them as well. I felt like steam machine was more referring to the console type template and did not realize it was an actual OS.
Anyone can hit me up I will sell you a totally custom steam machine tomorrow with only a $100 markup.
J/K There are plenty of build guides floating around here even now and myself as well as many others are perfectly happy to answer build questions. |

I wonder what the price would be for that PS4K. I'm betting on ridiculous.
Only the game developers will decide if the current PS4 stays valid.
Lackluster yes. I feel like that was because of a race to market and a cash grab. Accountants always get the first choice so it is what it is.
Ridiculous price is most likely true. |
